A New Green Hydrogen

Production Technology Company

With the discovery and patent filing of this novel method of producing completely carbon-free Green Hydrogen (H2), H2Generation Inc (H2G) has been formed to carry out the development of this new technology from the proof-of-concept stage through the Preliminary Engineering and Product Engineering stages to a commercial prototype.

It has been well understood for many years that hydrogen would unquestionably be the world’s best fuel. The question has always been how to produce it economically without releasing large quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere. Currently over 96% of all hydrogen is produced by using fossil fuels, primarily natural gas and coal. This process emits, on average, over 7 kilograms of CO2 and GHGs for each kilogram of hydrogen produced.

The Technology

The H2Generation Inc (H2G) technology is expected to produce green hydrogen at an energy efficiency exceeding all current methods and targeted to exceed 80%. Unlike current methods, including electrolysis, that operate at about 55 – 65% efficiency (from electric power ‘in’ to H2 ‘out’). H2G’s rather substantial increase in efficiency is partly the direct result of all components for the electrolysis system and electric power supply are now incorporated in one package. As such there are few losses due to energy transmission, waste heat, etc. As well the H2G format for the electrolysis is notably different from current approaches.

Most of today’s Green H2 production methods operate using water and must use renewable or green electricity as inputs. Whereas the H2G method uses water but generates its own electricity internally with any form of input power. Thus, the success of this technology as a source of Green H2 is not solely dependent on all-to-scarce green electricity as the power source. The H2G internally generates the required electricity is a result of a new integrated method of generating the necessary electricity as it is consumed.

No external electrical power is required.

The question is not so much "will H2G work" but as to "how well will it perform". The technical concepts are basic and widely known, understood and used, so it is now a matter of putting these proven technical concepts together in a completely novel and simple low-cost format.

In production, the selling price of the H2G system is expected to be at least 25% lower per unit of output hydrogen than current electrolysis methods, but inclusive of electrical power generation, transmission and conditioning. This capital cost reduction is because the system relies on modular processing units (replaceable "cells") that lend themselves to standardization, volume production savings and techniques. It does not use any rare or expensive materials. This technology lends itself to production of modular units from the smallest to the very largest scale that can be used wherever hydrogen is needed.

Development Plan and Timing

The development work began in early May 2022 and progress has already been made on detail design, simulation and first level prototype materials purchasing.

The company has fortunately been able to negotiate an agreement with Professor Dr. Ibrahim Dincer of the Ontario Tech University and his team of two PhD students and a Post-Doctoral Fellow. Under this agreement the work, will be expanded to include a more detailed analysis of theory, simulations, feasibility studies as well as building several iterations of the actual prototype. While this work, being as thorough as it is expected to be, will take marginally longer because it is expected to substantially improve the chances of complete success with the highest possible efficiency. Further it is likely to lead to additional patentable features, some of which are already being discussed. As well it has already led to the now approved 50% Federal Government  ”Mitacs” funding of the University’s $250,000 portion of the work.

H2G principals meet regularly by Zoom and periodically on site with Dr. Dincer and his interns to discuss progress and problems with appropriate documentation flowing back and forth. The results to date are most encouraging but there is still a lot of work ahead. During the H2G prototype construction and testing the business development plan and filing the final H2G national patent applications will be completed. The result of this initial development stage will conclusively demonstrate the viability of the technology to produce green hydrogen at a lower operating and capital cost than all current systems.

The goal is to have the first working prototype by late spring 2023 and a fully completed system by late 2023 or early 2024.

The cost of completing this development and initiating the exploitation work is under $400,000 with government support currently covering $125,000 and likely to cover more than 50% of total costs as additional support programs are in process.

Market Potential

The development of worldwide interest in hydrogen as a clean fuel to replace fossil fuels is well understood and increasingly accepted. Currently, of the $130 billion (about 95 million metric tons) of annual H2 production. 96+% of hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels. This creates enormous amounts of CO2, at 7.1 kilograms per kilogram of hydrogen. With a CAGR of over 6% with projections of the demand for hydrogen and particularly green hydrogen estimated at over $250 billion annually by the early 2030’s. Green H2 demand is estimated to have a CAGR at well over 20%. Supply of green H2 from standard electrolysis is unlikely to be able to meet this demand primarily because of the lack of adequate green electricity and the high capital cost and long lead times for new large scale electrolysis production facilities. Whereas this new H2G technology lends itself to building smaller more efficient facilities wherever the hydrogen is required, thereby eliminating the transportation and electrical power distribution problems.

Financially there are two items of particular note, first is that to transport hydrogen it must be highly compressed or liquified and this uses approximately 30% of the energy contained in the hydrogen giving in situ H2G hydrogen production a further 30% price advantage. Secondly, by replacing dirty hydrogen it is expected that the new H2G hydrogen will attract significant Carbon Credits. These credits are projected to be to over $1.20 per kg in 2030 or about 50+% of estimated selling price. Needless to say, this will add dramatically to the company’s profit margins and hence the expected valuation of the company.

The Management

To ensure the success of this project the company has assembled a very strong highly experienced Board of Directors. Each director has been involved with the creation of multiple different companies and growing these companies by finding the best and the brightest management teams.

The technology has been developed and patented by Colin C Kerr. Colin has a proven record with many patents to his name. Colin continues to act as the Director of Engineering.

Further details of the company’s plans and the patent are available under NDA.
